Nothing much to do tonight and seeing as there are a lot of updates I thought I'd try to update my 8gig SD card that I am using in the DS daily from scratch - ie. format it and install everything via PC. Guess what. Yep, it fails when inserted into the DS. Did it twice to be sure. I updated by backup 4gig SD card and that works (that ain't the original SD card - that one is obviously tucked away). All three cards are totally identical except that one of em is an 8gig.
I did a 'dd' image copy on a linux machine of the fully updated and defragged 4gig card to the 8gig and it now works again. Copying the card this way makes the DS708 update program think the 8gig card is a 4gig - same with windows explorer (although disk management from XP control panel still reports the card as 8gig). I am guessing that the DS knows the the 8gig card is not a 4gig so to speak when formatted and updated from scratch.
Have they been at it again ??? (Like the binding shite we had before).
I do have a lot of experience in reverse engineering ARM processors so if it turns out that they are trying it on again I might be inclined to reverse the DS firmware, and they must realise what that means...
I am running an 8gb Sandisk Ultra SDHC class 10. It works perfectly. I'm not even sure that I had to format it, although if I did format it, I'd almost certainly have used NTSF.
It was not necessary for me to access my high level geek skills, break out Linux, or create disk images to get the new card to work. I'm not sure why you needed to clone your card, there was no need for me to do so..... perhaps the update software was updated after your post to allow 8g cards. The only "problem" I experienced was when I forgot to direct the update program to the appropriate drive letter for the memory card. The updater will not permit file download/installs to fixed drives (for example you can't update c: )
I just put the new card in the reader, hooked the reader to my desktop PC (running Windows 7), opened the update program, put in my password, selected the appropriate drive letter from the dropdown menu, selected update all, and the DS update program acknowledged the card and downloaded and installed all the files.
I discovered the above information because when I first got my DS it was incredibly slow at updating and installing, and the software itself was a bit glitchy. The DS would lock up sometimes. I did some quick troubleshooting and determined that the original memory card was defective. Within 24 hours of owning it, I went out and bought the new memory card and updated it. Everything works perfectly now.
If you want to use bigest and fastst CDHC card you can make clone on your 4 gb card with HDDRawCopy Software. Before i try to make copy via windows explorer and try to install via PC manager for DS708 without success. After make copy image with HDDRawCopy all working very well, but tester is not faster that factory. Simple, i have using 16 gb now SanDisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s class 10 U1.
EDIT: The scanner support max 4 gb sd card. I get 16gb card now to using on photo and buy new card Sandisk Extreme 30 mb/s 4 gb and work very well
